1. Actually , men grooming and clothing can cost more.
So true. An ex and I both went to ROSS years ago and decided we would both only spend 50 bucks. She came out with so much more than I did. I did, however, luck out and find a shirt for $25.00 that was being sold on Amazon for $100.00.
A lot of my wardrobe comes from an Italian clothing store called Milano's in the mall near my house, and boy, they sure stick it to me, but as my uncle told me growing up "if you want something, you pay the price or do without."
hahahaha@ the cat cam. If I had one, my cats would find a way to destroy it.

Well an invention called a selfie stick kind of says something about people values? Willow I would agree about it's less important in the quiant cape cod towns but where the rich live I would say it's a big part of their life, similar to Long Island. Capecod is always compared to Long Island. The fact that it is constantly compared is proof enough there is a large population in both places that indulge in conspicuous consumption. How to put this tactfully....must be something they do on Long Island, not here. :) Really. Here is never compared to there, maybe because of the close proximity of Long Island to NYC? But I'm just guessing. I really never heard that comparison before and I've lived here 20 years. Also, truly rich and poor alike here do not dress up. Yes, there are uber rich properties on the eroding coastlines, and the rich have taken over many places buying up the smaller older homes and rebuilding them to their standards as their second homes, but really it still is so quaint as you put it pretty much everywhere here except for the great metropolis of Hyannis :), or the gay capital of the northeast here in Provincetown where you'll find oodles of delicious fakeness when the drag queens are displaying or performing. Sure we dress up more when we go to the theatre in Boston (almost 1.5 hours away from where I am about half way out on the Cape), though I was surprised how little dressed up people were there too the last time I went a few years ago. But it's known here how casual people dress and their nicer clothes they moved here with from elsewhere often sit unused in closets year after year. Second-hand shops here are full of wonderful things for that reason, if you are looking for something fancy. Make-up is usually worn in a pretty natural way here and fake nails seems quite common too (not by me), but false eyelashes, fake tans and hair extensions are just not seen here except very occasionally by a temporary tourist. And you'll only find men in suits by bank officers and... um, that's about it. :)

Orlando is the kind of place where one can see just about anything depending on which sections they go through. Overall, though, it has become so "Hollywood" over the last few decades.

Actually, it is compared in travel forums and when comparing beaches. For example in the top 10 beaches in the East coast 1 is in Cape Cod and 2 on long island :)... They both are historic, with maritime character and ample beaches that attract heavy tourism during the summer months.
True but you just may not recognize the brands. My sister in law actually works in one of those "rich people residences on Cape Cod and they spend thousands on clothing and cars. The problem is its name brands just not CLASSY wear like one wears at the Opera. She even get Botox paid by by her employer. So the spending is there its just not so recognized outside the social sets of the rich.

^ Ahh, good points. Maybe there's classy, and when done well is not visible, and then there's trashy, which is not seen so much here. And then of course those who have their second homes here of the very affluent variety might bring their glam squads to make them up to look beautifully natural. :) I learn so much from watching Housewives of various rich places! Adding that was a joke. I watched a couple of episodes and that was it. They're nuts and you wonder do these people really act like that in real life, or just for the camera and producers to keep them on the show?

Yes July, I am in Edmonton and I believe there are lots of similarities between here and where you live. I don't know that I would call it beauty here but it is certainly a lot of natural when it comes to not wearing makeup, but oddly enough, not a lot when it comes to all the other stuff I was talking about - nails, hair extensions, lashes, eyebrow microblading, and lots of laser stuff to the face. I don't quite understand what people are talking about when they discuss their various face treatments, but it all sounds like a lot money and hassle. I actually have no idea what Calgarians are into. I haven't been there in about 15 years, except for passing through the airport. It is far more white collar than here though so it may be different. And yes, when we see a man dressed and groomed around here, we tend to think he is visiting or new to town. willow, it's been about 30 years since I visited the Cape. I remember the gorgeous tans. It seemed that the weather there meant people could get gorgeous tans there without having to go the fake route. Although I don't have the cash (or patience) for any of the other practices mentioned above, I will, on occasion, use a self-tanner on my face and chest in the Summer. It’s not that I NEVER tan my face and chest in the sun, but I am cognizant of that thing that happens to women’s’ chests when they have a lot of sun exposure and I feel that it just wouldn’t be very smart of me to go to the trouble of moisturizing my face, neck and chest only to turn around and try to bake them. I can’t afford any of the great skin treatments out there so I have to settle for old-fashioned maintenance 😊. On the money thing, when I went to boarding school in high school, there were some with MONEY. I won’t mention names but rest assured, you use or have used the products their families make. So we are talking generational, old money. There was lots of new money there too. There was a very distinct difference. The old money, you’d never know to look at the kids. The new money, it was all they could do not to have their kids flashing wallets stuffed with wads of cash. If you looked at the old money parents, I found the fathers never showed it. The mothers were a different thing. Their clothing was not flashy but you could tell it was high quality and very expensive. The new money, again, the fathers tended not to show it but the mothers, whew, very flashy.

I'll go get red contacts, help me skip lines maybe Hahaha, I would say you are spot on Joe. The guy looked like he may have been a past "client" of yours during your policing days. Let's just say I think he tends to get a pretty wide berth whereever he goes.

........snip.....I don't really have much of an idea as to how many here have gym memberships. There are some, for sure, but since I don't have one and probably glaze over if anyone brings it up, pretty sure I am out of the loop in knowing who frequents the gym :-). I've been watching YouTube videos about the nomad and van dweller life style. Many of them have a gym membership at one of the cheap national gym chains. If for no other reason than they have access to shower facilities at them. Some of them are pretty cheap, like $10-$20 a month.

I have seen people I know are quite well off, rich even, in torn Levis, paint stained sweatshirts and well worn top-sider leather boat shoes. I was at a big boat show 40 years ago and at the display of a 45' sailboat, a guy dressed that way was trying to get info on the boat. The salesman kept blowing him off, talking to others more nicely dressed. If that salesman had been paying attention, he would have noticed the gold Rolex Submariner and the huge gold nugget ring the guy was wearing. The guy had $10-20k worth of bling right there. I've seen lots of people like that around the boating scene.

When I was 20 and 21 I spent two summers as a camp counsellor at a wealthy all-girls' summer camp near Ottawa as the assistant drama instructor. It taught me a lot about rich people. We had children of famous actors, NFL football players, lawyers, politicians, etc. A lot of wealthy Europeans sent their daughters there for 6 weeks. There definitely was a difference between old and new money.
Interestingly, there are a lot of rich people in Saskatchewan around where I live but you'd never guess it by meeting them. There are a lot of wealthy farmers and retired farmers and men with high up positions with the CNR, potash mines or oil companies. My parents were pretty well off until I was about 10 then their business and farming tanked at once and they hovered on bankruptcy which is what led to their divorce (not the affairs of my dad interestingly enough). Farm country is a strange place when it comes to money. There are times when people are rich and then the next year they aren't. Many farmers are dealing in millions of dollars a year between buying new equipment, land and putting in and harvesting a crop. It's a lot like gambling. Some years you lose everything and other years you win big. All depends on the economy and weather. A lot of people are doing bad in these parts currently. World markets for Canadian legumes, canola and potash are not great. The oil industry is getting demolished by the climate change activists and the Liberal government. I really hate to admit it, but I agree with someone who commented on the Wexit page that Canada needs a Donald Trump rather than a Justin Trudeau. I get why so many in the U.S. are voting for Trump. Though I hate hate hate Trump, his economic policies are what's needed.

As for wealth, some people like to wear it on their sleeve while others don't. I would venture to guess those who don't simply got tired of fake friends only sticking around for the money or were always that way for the sake of never attracting them.
