It's more than a bit concerning how much the superficial exterior has become the prime goal of so many's self image and life.
Are they working on their internal beauty too? Do they even know there is more to them than their looks?
Maybe it's just like all other fads and will pass, but with their addiction to taking and posting selfies too, I have concerns the superficial exterior has become an all too powerful distortion and addiction for a whole generation of women.
Adding I'm all for going all out for the very special occasion like a fund raising ball or wedding, anniversary, birthday, etc. But to feel the need to be so enhanced every day is what alarms me.
Besides, honestly I feel so many women are so much more beautiful without their makeup. I'm still learning to realize that for myself, especially as I age and a little makeup goes a long way... but the extreme is too much imo.

This superficial stuff has always existed as long as make up has and that has been an extremely long time. People are very self absorbed. You get to see it more now through media platforms. Nothing new just more viewable from a distance.

True, @spectravision . Even tribal women and men enhance themselves superficially with body paints, scarring, tattooing... Guess the extreme level of it these days here with many in this country is when I wonder if it's a healthy way to exist? bendingbough19 , what state are you in? Here on Cape Cod it is much more natural and less of this going on, even in the young except there are so many nail salons all ages seem to use. Think it could be a regional range of how far they go. Cities here seem to set the fashion trend for everything. Then I have a close friend here who's from Scotland originally and her niece was visiting last year and she's from Liverpool and was beautifully dressed, hair done and make up on for a casual lunch. She said all the girls, young and old where she lives do their full dressing up and make-up even to go food shopping.

Many people can't see passed themselves @willow. They are so important. In their own head.

Healthy and so beautiful! Plus they are trying to save their world against the rest of us determined to destroy it for profit while we play with our phones and selfies. :(

People don't realise how important the Amazon is and once it is gone. It is gone. I don't call it destroying it alone. I call it stealing it too. We need to leave them alone.
But, Fred on facebook didn't like my post. I'm so gonna kill myself and today I will post multiple selfies that took 100 camera shot to get the right angle of my filtered life.

When I was a teenager in the 70's, saving the rainforests was so embedded in our heads.
It's shocking to me all these years later that is still known, but ignored in the name of profit and survival too for so many with no other means. Reading that link really brings it home the troubles of how they know better, but some feel they have no choice but use the land and deforest it for survival.
When our governments ignore the long term greater good of humanity for the short term profit, ultimate destruction is bound to happen. Providing a means of surviival for the local people is necessary too, but no government seems sympathetic to the very poor.

There are definitely regional differences. In Montreal and many other places in Quebec, nearly everyone is very fashionable and there is not a lot of obesity. In Vancouver, one province over from me, there is a significant film and modeling indudstry. On any given day, you will walk past a photo shoot in the downtown. People there tend to be fashonable, fit and will spend on getting the best to help with their appearance. In other parts of BC, people are more "granola" (my description) but tend to be fit, simply because the weather is great and there is great walkability. In the colder and more industrial parts, not so much. My city is quite blue collar, but there is also a mix of white collar workers. Pick up trucks are everywhere. The men often make a lot of money and it is not uncommon to see a couple where the man sports a large belly, unkempt in both hair and clothes, but with a very gorgeous young woman. There is quite a bit of obesity here in both genders. In larger cities of Ontario, it is common for both genders to present their best self.

Providing a means of surviival for the local people is necessary too, but no government seems sympathetic to the very poor. It is all about resources and they eventually run out. Governments just do not care about poor people. Notice you have just enough so not to cause any trouble like kicking them out of power or having a revolution?
No offence to the lad that was bullied for being a Dwarf. But where are the corporate owned social justice celebrities when it comes to the Amazon. Quiet because that doesn't get them the Pennies from their owners.

Well an invention called a selfie stick kind of says something about people values?
Willow I would agree about it's less important in the quiant cape cod towns but where the rich live I would say it's a big part of their life, similar to Long Island. Capecod is always compared to Long Island. The fact that it is constantly compared is proof enough there is a large population in both places that indulge in conspicuous consumption.

There is quite a bit of obesity here in both genders. In larger cities of Ontario, it is common for both genders to present their best self. I'm guessing you are in Edmonton or Calgary. Your description of there pretty much fits the description of people here. The only time you see heels or skirts are at weddings or funerals or when you see Hutterites. A lot of people are obese and overweight and I do think our long cold winters have a lot to do with it. There are a lot of men who make a lot of money but you don't see too many women who do. And for men, jeans and t-shirts and 4x4 pickup trucks are the style of men in general. Men don't seem to put much effort into their appearance and it would be unfashionable here for them to do so. Even guys who have to wear suits and such to work, change out of them at works end to wear the casual look. I do see women, especially in the warmer months, putting in more effort but nowhere near the effort of women in some places like Vancouver or Toronto. Here natural beauty is more appreciated.
