As the above posts indicate, that (allegedly) democratic governments the world over, have abrogated their legal responsibility to the electorate...is now widely understood. The question therefore becomes, "what can be done?" In Canada and the US, substantive change will require a shift away from the traditional two party system. The idea that changing the color of suits in Washington or Ottawa (from Democrat to Republican or Conservative to Liberal)has such a capacity...is deficient. Noted is that in Canada (where the majority claim to be deeply concerned about the environment)the only federal party thusly committed, holds one seat in parliament.
Currently holding enormous sway is the (patently irrational) belief (which created and continues to fuel global warming)that environmental interests can be sacrificed for the economic variety. Such a conviction underscores a failed understanding of the nature of political power. For, "No matter how complex or affluent, human societies are nothing more than sub-systems of the biosphere...the earth's thin veneer of life, which is ultimately run by fungi, bacteria and green plants." (Vaclav Smil)

I like that quote.... a lot. Even after dinosaurs were obliterated, those three survived.

(Vaclav Smil) It sounds like they increased to two seats earlier this month. Still a loooooong way to go, but at least it's a foot in the door.

We would note that Mr Hyer wasn't elected as a member of the Green party. That politicians can shift their allegiance isn't (to my mind) right. To sit as an independent is a semi-legitimate but politically futile decision. However, crossing the floor isn't authorized by the electorate, and therefore shouldn't be permitted.
When lunacy is suspended, we're left with the understanding that, humanity exists at the pleasure of a holy environmental trilogy. In the absence of air, food, and water...no human life or subsequent economic activity transpires. The idea that there could be more valuable commodities than these, is logically indefensible. Most unfortunately however, we live in a world of unreason.

This is what totally baffles me too. 'We' continue to contaminate the air, land and water in more and more horrifying ways...and know we are doing it...and know we are creating slow (and not so slow) suicide for all.
I am confounded by human beings' total distortion of obvious common sense....and total greed for immediate gratification at the expense of all.
We are not evolved, or evolving, in my mind, no matter how big the ego gets. Quite the reverse.

So he's all over the news this week, started a fresh propaganda assault on the great unwashed through the gogglebox, lying through his caps about how fracking can help Britain. I vote that all fracking pumps be situated in Cam's back garden, or preferably up his arse.
