Be wary of which torrent clients you use. Mu torrent (uTorrent) is still extremely popular, but did you know it's got a hidden wee thing? It's using a lot of processing power along with bandwith as it has a hidden bitcoin miner. In other words, that "free" tool using you to make money every time you use it. If you are on a limited monthly data use, it will be stealing some of that.
Currently, I'm using qBittorrent. Has glitches in stopping transfers at times, but worth that for peace of mind in knowing that I am in control of how much data I'm transferring. Oh, qBit is open source, which is always a good thing... nothing hidden in the code.

I have a uTorrent client from many years ago before they put the other crap into it... one thing I always make a point of doing is saving the original exe/msi installers for stuff I install on my machines (I keep a directory on my server called "InstalledApps")...
Been burned too many times with apps, especially free/shareware, that are crap-free in say version 2.1, and suddenly they release 2.3 or 3.x and its loaded with spyware/adware... I can always remove it and go back to the old version. (Also did this at my jobs, where say after Oracle bought out BEA Systems they stopped even having older (more than 2 versions back) of WebLogic for download - annoying when you're supporting legacy systems that you might need the original installer for disaster recovery, etc. I had like a 200GB repository of years worth of every java installer, java server, patch files, etc, that we'd ever used - just in case. :p

Good thinking, Batman. I generally just refuse to upgrade. At least not until I have a good sniff around the files included. You do realise, however, that you've just exploded swannie's skull with all that info, don't you? Another thing, I read that as BAe Systems n was wondering when British Aerospace had sold their ship building and engineering division to a software company!!

Yah, I'm always hesitant to "upgrade" without a good reason. What *are* the "new features" and are they really anything I need?
Most of my coworkers couldn't understand why I use a flip phone and haven't 'upgraded' to a $500 'smart' phone. Just had to 'upgrade' from my old Nokia (AT&T is phasing out 2G this year), so I bought a used Samsung 3G flip phone for $15 to replace it. ;)
I understand 'tech', I just don't see the need to have the 'latest and greatest' of everything, or relying on tech in every aspect of my life.
(Interesting one, my old boss posted on FB how he got an add-on for his garage door opener to connect it to the internet, so he can use his Apple iWatch to open the garage door. I asked if he really needed to open the garage door from CT when he's back visiting family (he's in MI, figure 800-1000miles)?
He said it was so he didn't have to carry the 'bulky' garage door opener when he was out bike riding or walking, and check to see if he closed the door remotely. I didn't bother replying that he could just walk out and look if his memory was that bad, and he could hide the remote outside or they make keypads you can hook up outside the garage. If it's not 'high tech' he's not interested - I think he's installing the "IoT" thermostat too.
I'm debating if I should try to hack his house so the garage door constantly opens/closes randomly and the heat is on all summer and randomly goes off in the winter. :D).

Ha... I kept my old 2G sim out of nostalgia. It's real old green n white Genie n not the blue it became when changed to O2. Was bril... free texts n that when Genie n I could wangle free WAP on my old motorola by changing one or two settings... ports n wap addresses O2 cards used to be referred to as Genie cards by folk over here. Genie was, in fact, owned by British Telecom who flogged it off to a German company that changed it to O2 then flogged it on to a Spanish mob. Now BT have rejoined the mobile market....

I have to admit I get a bit 'scared' at the things I've seen being in tech... I mean, I've had younger (20's) people come to me with a question, and I've literally typed almost exactly what they asked into Google and pasted them 3 or 4 links on how to do it. ... and then a year later they were back with the same question. (?!?) I had one coworker come to me with a question on WebSphere (since I was the 'expert' for some strange reason), I said "oh, I ran into that one like 3 years ago, go to this config page and change this option to "X" and it should fix it." Their reply was "how can you remember something you did 3 years ago?" (Mind you it took me an hour or two back then to figure out myself, with nobody to 'ask' - just using my own intuition/experience)... I was left wondering how you can survive in IT if you *can't* remember something from a few years ago? I question whether people rely too much on "the internet" for answers they don't retain stuff? I guess I keep the flip phone thing going because, well, I don't see any reason I "need" the internet with me 24/7/365?

On the bright side I'm reading news that Apple has been hurting lately because people are tired of lining up to get the newest iMBroke device, apparently they're starting to value having food on the table more than the latest toy.

Apple are rotten to the core. Churn out cheap, shoddy shite with an immense mark up. They had the cheek to try n sue Samsung for copying them. A company that not only use inferior parts to Samsung, but actually get the majority of parts FROM Samsung.

Well, my favorite is still Apple stealing the graphical interface idea from Xerox PARC, and then suing Microsoft for "stealing their idea" with Windoze.

There are certain things in life my brain just can't get a handle on. Numbers is one, time is another, and anything to do with computers. I get something explained to me, in the simplest terms by the most patient people and it still doesn't click. It's like my mind is missing the computer literacy files somehow. This is from a woman who's mother was one of the first female IT teachers in the 80s.
So yes Stu my brain exploded at the second post.
