I have to admit I get scared about what would happen to our society these days if (which has been the topic of numerous articles lately about the 'fragility' of our electric infrastructure) we got a EMP (high altitude nuke) or "Carrington event" that knocked out the grid for a really long time.
When hurricane Sandy hit the northeast I was out for 5 days, I'd prepared headed in with a fully charged phone (and I have a few extra batteries charged up), had some rechargeable solar "driveway lights" (single high-brightness LED) I charged up outside daily and stayed alive most of the night - just as "hallway" lights to keep things lit enough to walk around safely, and then candles and couple of battery lanterns to read by... can cook on my grill or wood stove, etc. The house next door had a generator going 24/7 the whole time, house lit up like a Xmas tree, I could see the flickering of the TV in one window...
Sometimes I think if it was a longer time, people w/o TV, internet, etc... a lot people would start to lose it. Just food alone would be a problem - grocery stores would be empty within a week w/o deliveries (and no power = no gas pumps) - statistically most people barely have enough food for a week.

Your tale reminded me of a short story by Ray Bradbury called "The Pedestrian"... it's old but starting to ring more and more true, @forums1 Rapid edit... here's a pdf of it... all 3 pages plus an extra page of Qs... told ye it was a short story
