Is it the type that requires 2 USB ports? Is it the same USB used as when it was working?

just has one usb port, at the top I believe. Cleaned all the contacts, checked for any bent pins, and all seem ok. Just that one minute it was working, and then poof.

If it's used with a lappie, make sure the lappie is into the mains and not just battery... if there's a USB3 port, try that... or at least another port. If it came with a Y splitter USB cable, plug both USBs into the PC. Could be lack of power, ye see. This is a Y cable:

it didn't come with a Y cable. And we tried battery and main power, tried other usb ports also. Still didn't work.
Her lappie is almost brand new, only a few months old. All her videos and school work are on the external.

Just read a few reviews... seems it's happened to others... only 750 gig drive I could find is def USB 3... have ya def got USB 3 ports? Can only suggest ye get right on to acer support on this page www.acer.ca/ac/en/CA/content/support but, be warned, ye may have to be a tad forceful.... from what I read, they're not exactly excellent at customer service. Even if ye don't have the receipt, if it was bought using plastic, that'll be proof enough... banking statement. I had similar wi Seagate... the mini USB socket in the drive caddy was susceptible to breaking internally.
