Mark Duggan.
Police were vindicated on unlawful shooting. The twat had a gun. OK, it was found in the cab he was a passenger in. Were the police to know whether or not he had another concealed weapon?
Zero policy is my own view. No-one in the UK carries a loaded weapon as protection, therefore... it follows... he was a threat. He was removed.
Dear Duggan family and Tottenham, get a fookin grip... he was involved in a crime gang. He knew the risks. He took them... and lost.

The problem is you and I only know what the papers tell us, (unless you know the deceased and his family?) and as I trust the papers as much as I do a hungry hyena I can't pass a concrete judgement.
My thoughts are that IF he was the gang criminal and murderer the papers say he was then yes, live by the sword die by the sword is fair enough, if that was the case then karma has come knocking. However he wasn't threatening anyone with a gun when he was shot was he? According to this country's laws I think the rule is shoot when being shot at and not when you think some bloke has a gun stashed away somewhere down his underpants. Technically it was unlawful, but if he wasn't living lawfully in the first place then, like I said, karma bit him on the bum.

why be in possession of a fire arm in this country? WHY? Was he a ranger culling deer? A farmer shooting vermin?
Did several businesses deserve to be looted and/or torched in his name?

I know nothing of the details surrounding the story, but as far as a reason for having a firearm is concerned, I believe anyone with a family has the right to defend them, and in this sometimes ugly world, sometimes nothing short of weaponry is adequate

Grey, the person in question was shot by police. He was illegally in possession of a firearm and had been involved (allegedly) in a previous shooting with that very pistol. Arseholes went on the rampage which nearly led to another great fire of London. It also kicked off in Manchester. Eejits joining in. One arse was caught looting.... a bag of effin rice! Own brand at that ha ha
Mind, gun licences are not common in the UK. They are only issued to gamekeepers and the likes or to controlled gun clubs.

I learned to shoot at 13, on a farm. Stu, down here lots of peeps have guns, they have them for shooting game, they have to have a license and a safe place to store the guns, proper childproof, idiot proof, drunk proof, locks and the likes.
Guns are used in a different way in the UK Grey, there is a different mindset about guns here, I'm not saying either way is wrong ... just explaining how it is.
Anyhoo ...
I'm not saying morally that the little shite didn't just get what he gave out, as I said, live by the sword die by the sword. But legally I think the argument is that if he wasn't actually holding the gun and aiming it at someone with the intent to kill then the police were not supposed to shoot him.

There is a different mindset in Canada regarding guns too.
I was surprised to see Grey's post. Forgive me for saying this, but it seems to be more of an "American" type of thinking. (USA).
As for me, personally I don't know anyone that owns a gun here in Canada except my best friend that is a cop.

I seem to have been misunderstood or my comment misinterpreted. By no means do I feel firearms are primarily an article with the sole purpose of violence. I grew up handling guns since I was about 6 or 7 years old. I spent endless hours in my youth enjoying activities utilizing firearms. A friend and I used to like to play "try and keep the can airborn until your magazine is empty". When we could afford it we loved to buy cases of clay pigeons and have our little competitions. (with the shrapnel over the years, ya probably woulda needed more than a dumptruck to hold it all) I reloaded my own 12 guage shells for well over a decade and used all high-end innards. I also used to make them a bit hot, hence I could start knocking ducks down before my uncle with his fancy top-of-the-line goose gun using 3 inch magnums. Anyhoo, I just cited that "right to provide one's family the necessary protection" as an example of why I feel they should never be totally outlawed.

I can understand the theory that an unarmed public is much easier to police and therefore rule, except actually the elite just rule the masses in other ways, making owning a gun a bit pointless and here where I live, protection isn't much of an issue and I don't feel the need to own a gun to protect myself. If I was going to own any form of protection it would be geese, they're the best guard 'things' going imo and I've watched grown men run from a gaggle hurtling full pelt towards them.

I like to think my cat is a killer guard cat.
He can attack shadows on the wall at a super lightening speed and can run under the bed just as fast when someone besides myself enters the home
