Comp slowing down? When was last time you defragmented your hard drive? Windows is sloppy... once it's used a program, it dumps it back anywhere it feels like on your hard drive. This fragments programs and means windows has to search for the bits next time it uses fragmented programs. Defragmenting joins the bits back up. As well as speeding up your PC, it prolongs the life of your HD as the needle doesn't have to scan as much... remember, it's mechanical n mech stuff wears out! So... instead of using the in built defraggmenter (it's slow and not very good), try Defraggler which is free. Use the green button to get it. Once installed, try to run it at least every couple of weeks. If your drive is a mess, run it overnight when you're not using the machine.

Oh christ I haven't defragged for bloody ages. I wonder if that's why my lappy keeps over heating. Of course it might need a hoovering too.

I used to be really bad for cleaning my computer too, and even still wouldn't be a candidate for the "good housekeeping" award. I just use that canned air stuff, remove the cover and blast the fans etc, then put it back together and vacuum up the mess after I'm done.
I've used defraggler for years, and sing it's praises regularly. It's by Piriform, the same firm that makes CCleaner of which I'm also a fan, as I find it to be pretty helpful for doing laundry, as well as find it pretty caveman friendly.

Good to get agreement on that... maybe it'll stir some action off any that never defrag then wonder why things are goin slow. Was gonna give CCleaner its own thread, but HERE it is. Great at finding redundant files AND cleaning the reigstry

Great at finding redundant files AND cleaning the reigstry I think it still warrants a thread of it's own actually (and singing it's praises a bit) as IMO it really is quite a valuable tool. Wipe drives etc too.
