Was reminded today of another really odd date about 10 or 11 years ago that involved pets too, but jumping ahead. And apologies now for it being a long story again. I can't seem to write concisely any more except in poetry.
So, online connection, lived in next town, nice man, first date decided to meet and go to local lovely cafe' for lunch I hadn't been to before that had nice outside seating area, garden with statues, etc. Met at his house (yes, unwise, but no danger), and took his little motorcycle as such a lovely day. Had a delicious lunch and decided to ride up to see a part of the water I'd never seen before either. But the motorbike had heated up by then and as I got off of it, I accidentally touched my shin to the exhaust pipe and of course instantly burned my leg, but pretended I hadn't because I felt so stupid. (That ended up being another rather serious burn to heal, but I'd been through it before from hot water, so knew what to do...but that's not part of the story)....
Saw lovely harbor, boats, and he then invited me back to his house for a cuppa tea, knowing I liked tea. Again unwise, but was in no danger. Besides, I can run fast when I need to and know where certain anatomical parts are located in case more serious intervention needs to happen to floor someone before they know what hit them...
But had no need to resort to such actions with him. He was a gentleman and I felt no threat. So when we got back, I noticed he had two really skinny sickly looking cats and my heart went out to them. He explained they were old and sick and in fact, one was being put to sleep that day. I was like, what??? A few minutes later there was a knock on the door and it was a very nice veterinarian who had come to put one of these cats out of their misery right there and then. And so, I sat on the floor to support this cat in her last moments of life, and this new friend who by now was falling apart with what was about to happen.
I stayed for another hour or so for him to bury his beloved cat, and he was a mess the whole time. Thankfully he did not invite me back for a repeat when his other cat needed the same. But I realized later, that day he needed extra support to get through it and unbeknownst to me, had chosen me to help him, I guess knowing I was a cat and people lover.
Addendum.... he continued to be a friend of mine and still is, though nothing romantic ever happened, nor ever will. But he's a good photographer and I ended up hiring him to do our informal family photos at my son's tiny wedding several years ago.
But really oddly coincidentally, he lives next door to my lovely lady and employer I started working for a year or two after this date. And, even more oddly to me, it was her father who was the vet who came that day.
