What's crazy about the video above is that there were other videos shot from the Van Halen 1 album on the day this one was recorded, yet MTV never played a single one of them.
They also banned the "Pretty Woman" video after the "Diver Down" album was released. Their reason?? Because there was a crossdresser in it. I'll be damned if I'll ever understand that one. Boy George was acceptable, but a crossdresser in a Van Halen wasn't? Wasn't MTV all about pushing diversity?
Roth was born to be an entertainer. I am so glad I grew up in the era where rock-n-rollers were the unapologetic, confident, larger than life, don't give a fuck, in your face, charismatic bad asses.
I want to puke on myself anytime I see artists today who are the antithesis of the aforementioned. The quirky, self-deprecating, coffee shop hipsters looking down at the ground through their entire acoustic set in an effort to be the "anti-rockstar".
It's makes about as much sense as joining a sports team to be the "anti-athlete".

This sounds authentic. To bad there isnt some video to go with it. They were smart enough to work on original material early on. SO many bands form with the intent of working on original material, but get caught up in being only a cover band for decades. It's very hard to find other musicians who are all on the same page in that regard.
Van Halen played some covers in their early days, but it wasn't for very long.

Dave very colorfully explaining the difference between himself and Hagar.
Is it just me or does he look exactly like Steve Martin when he laughs??

I saw the tribute video on Howard Stern when Wolf was on there a few days ago.
The father/son dynamic between them was great to see, but I still know I could never be a parent. I've never had a healthy enough of opinion of humanity to ever wish to bring children into the world.
Not to mention, I can easily envision myself being so strict and overprotective to the point of making my children miserable.

It's amazing how he came to that conclusion without even hearing an explanation, but that's a common characteristic with wannabe know-it-alls like him.

I was on Facebook a few days ago, and had yet another person try to give me the big lecture about having children. It was chock full of the typical attempts at profound statements and condescension one might imagine.
One of the most common things I hear is how children have brought "meaning" to their lives. Well, I've never viewed my life without children as a void needing to be filled. I've also never had a desire to propagate myself into the future. I honestly don't know of a single individual who has ever attempted to preach to me about parenthood whose words weren't rooted in unmitigated selfishness. It's about their legacy, their sense of having meaning in their lives, their fulfillment, etc.
If you ask me, a truly meaningless life is one that's lived doing what others expect you to do rather than doing what you want.
Bottom line - if I thought having children was a good idea for me, I would have already had them.

Sooooo.....the American Music Awards that aired last month didn't utter a peep about Eddie's death.
A man who is undeniably on the Mouth Rushmore of rock guitarists, and they couldn't bother to mention him. Absolutely disgraceful.
If Eddie had been black, there would have been headlines all over the globe about how racism was the root of him not being acknowledged. You can bet your last dollar on that.

Although I don't really watch the AMA (nor any other "award" shows) anymore..this really doesn't surprise me. One thing "we"....and this is a really loaded *WE*...meaning people that look like you and me...need to come to terms with ...is that the pop music world is moving on from rock music...hard, guitar based rock...much like the world seems to be moving on from what powered the popularity of hard, guitar based rock - people like you and me....white men. Sorry..I do realize this will be controversial, but I do see it as somewhat based in reality. I had a boss once, a black guy, who I really got along well with (still in touch to this day) and we debated music during a long business drive, and I told him of my distaste of most rap music...he tried to say that it was because maybe I just didn't like most black people (we had that relationship where we could honestly debate these things) and I reached under my car seat (I was driving) and opened my CD Case (ya, during the days when you had huge CD wallets everywhere in your car LOL) and showed him ALL my collection of BLACK artists (Motown/70's and 80's R&B,Funk...90's New jack, R&B, and even 70's and 80's Rap- mixed in with the Metallica, Zeppelin etc. )...and told him ...."Nah, it ain't that! I put a Chic CD into the player, turned it up to 11, and dashed his doubts that I didn't like rap cuz I didn't like black people. I don't wish to hijack your EVH thread for politics, but whatever. Ignoring EVH is yet just another sign the world is moving on from rock music...which is in and of itself is painful... but more painful is that it's a reminder the world is moving away from *ME*, no matter what, as the world tends to do with most aging people, regardless of race.

I just happened to hear about Eddie's death not being mentioned through an Eddie Trunk podcast. (boy, was he livid) Even if the average kid today doesn't necessarily like Van Halen, I'd venture to say they've heard at least a few songs. It's just sickening. Taylor Swift's goldfish could have died, and they would have done a fucking video tribute.

Yeah, this is such a tired argument. Motown was big in my household growing up. My issues with rap have been the lack of melody, the overuse of 808 kick drums, and the blatant glorification of violence, which one could say is more of a cultural issue than race.
