www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2013/04/17/by_closing_the_national_health_council_stephen_harper_is_abandoning_national_medicare.html" Just heard on the news Harper's announcements in Jordan today of aid in the amount of $150-million for humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees, $15-million to help destroy Syrian chemical weapons and another $5-million for right-to-play for refugee children. Just wondering where the rest of our elected representatives get to provide input in these munificent announcements with our dollars. I guess Mr. Flaherty will able to (at least announce he has managed to) balance the budget by election time anyway...smoke and mirrors may be involved. Meanwhile Statscan reported 46,000 lost jobs in Canada in December. New Harper government laws are making it more and more difficult to obtain UI so we can feed our Canadian kids and preserve their right to play... This is democracy North American/Canadian style..." You almost make it sound like ya think our wonderful politicians are **-a-a-a-ad people.

The quote was something someone else wrote but, I can not say that I disagree with him... and, I won't deny your assessment either!

New experiment going in Haddington here (near Edinburgh). No vehicles allowed within 3 streets of schools, unless residents, between 8-9am n 3-4pm cos o the arses droppin off their precious cargoes from chelsea tractors n near causin accidents. Should be interesting.... having to actually WALK (albeit a brief distance). It's due to run for 18 months and many other councils are watching closely. I say, "Why watch? Join in!"

Nice to see ethics like that still surviving nowadays.

I wish they'd do that here! It get's crazy at the elementary school just up the road from me; people stopping in the middle of the crosswalk or on the wrong side of the road to drop off kids.

Tizz, that's exactly why it's being trialled. Imagine big 4x4 Chelsea tractors (look up the urban dictionary) in a village, cos that's what Haddington is. I was slightly wrong... it's 3 streets that are no go areas, not up to 3 streets away. A wee bit about it on the BBC site for perusal.

I like the idea for elementary schools and younger kids. Notable hassle some places but It'd be worth it for the wee ones. If they're still daft enough to run out in front of vehicles after elementary school though.....

Speed limits in ALL school zones here in Nova Scotia are now 30mph. That law was passed last year. But it is only when classes are not in session...mornings, recess, noon and after school gets out, when there are kids around the school area.

It's like that here too manny and I think it has been for quite some time. 30 Km/h during the school activity hours, but this one stu mentions sounds like it's fiddling with ZERO DRIVING period in the areas during such timeframes. I'm 60/40 on the idea and curious how it pans out

the school in Haddington is a primary school for wee yins up to age 11.
30mph???????????? it's been 20 around schools here for years now... I still go for the NO autos thing. 30mph is our in-town max speed.
