Fun fun fun..... I just spent half a day (hopefully completely) getting rid of some Floxif trojan. Actually, my ineptitude is likely why stuff took me as long as it did because between Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes(the biggest contributor by far) I don't think more than 15 or 20 minutes was actually required for the cleaning. A couple more hours digging deep and trying to make sure no remnants remained, (fingers crossed)and all seems hunky dory again. I stumbled across a handy little tool during my cleanup/checkup called "Kapersky software updater" that seemed quite the breeze and felt I'd share the find with y'all. Slick little program. Oh, and that zemana malware hunter I mentioned a post ago was nice until the 30 day free trial ended, then the headaches of ditching security software began. Not really too big of a deal though I s'pose. It was pretty decent for 30 days at least. C'est la vie

I still have a computer that's acting strangely (brief pauses and stuttering, slow turn off with some odd screen right at the end very briefly, etc.) and displaying things that are new and unusual. I believe the CCleaner floxif trojan is far more formidable of a threat than people are being told. Since this ugliness took place right after avast acquired piriform and is far more complex than anything people have experienced previously, I personally am now in the process of purging anything even remotely related to avast and piriform, then hunting for any remnants. I believe this is likely a wise path to follow for anybody that might have been exposed/infected but haven't the knowledge to elaborate. Avast's website is elaborating on the incident at some length (credible or not is up to us) if you just search "CCleaner floxif news". Wishing you all the best, and hoping this ugliness doesn't bite any of you.

As a side note, as a long time IT person, if a guy calls me up with a virus/Trojan or one of those pop ups saying "a virus was detected, call xxx-xxx-xxx and we'll scan and clean your machine for $59.95", my first question is "let me guess, a porn site?"
95%+ of the time they're stunned, and then admit it. :P
My neighbor got his first laptop a few years ago, literally called me 2 days after he bought it, like 9pm, and I asked that. Yup. I told him that after 30 years on computers it's my first guess, and almost always right. :)

...and on a further development related to Avast distributing viruses for a month, (Ccleaner floxif trojan) now they've also acquired AVG as well. One more on my ever growing "not trustworthy" list, not to mention how poorly a big antivirus firm spreading an ugly trojan to trusting clients for a month reflects on their competence in the field

They two buggers ye mentioned (Avast and AVG) were dumped by me many years ago. They're just bloatware that didn't overwrite when doing updates, the just added more files. Thi actually meant it was better to uninstall then reinstall with latest version as they were actually slowing down PCs. AVG should have been called AVL cos it sure is like putting virtual lead boots on a machine. As far as I can see, Security Essentials, Malwarebytes and bit defender anti ransomware is a good, lightweight mix. edit... I use Malwarebytes Premium which comes with anti ransomware. Free version doesn't. Shhhh.... didn't pay for it.
