Well, I just spent maybe an hour out picking saskatoons (I guess they call 'em service berries now) and got over half a gallon. As an extra bonus, the mom from next door was picking nearby with her little fella and having far less success than I was. I told her if she wanted to do the baking I'd just give her the berries and she could get 2 pies that we'd split. She was all for the idea and pie is on the horizon.

^^^I have a Serviceberry tree in my front yard thicket. I think berries may be out of reach, will have to see. I have a(n) European Cranberry bush (Viburnum opulus) in same said thicket the berries of which are now starting to turn from yellow to red. The birds usually get them before I do~
Think you made an excellent deal with your neighbor---your berries for a pie! Win/Win all around. ;-)

Yeah, I stink at the pie crust thing. Getting better last attempt, but still pretty solid and work chewing. You should prune your service berry bush as it'll be easier to harvest, plus it gets thicker and more laden with berries by a very noticeable amount

^^^My Serviceberry is in tree form, maybe thirty feet high now? Never was a bush, except maybe at birth and then shaped into upright tree form for sale at the Nursery. Might be worth looking into planting a bush form~

As long as it has a few lower branches it can be pruned back above them. It might take a few years to reshape it but would be doable. I've pruned back at least 20 footers into big bushes before. Some of the ones I'm raiding now are likely around 15 feet tall.... at least till later this summer when I have a chat with them.
